The squat is not a hypertrophy (building muscle) exercise or a strength exercise. It is a squat. Your goal changes what you need from it. Strength work puts more weight on practising the movement you want to improve and handling high loads with repeatable technique. Hypertrophy work puts more weight on training the target muscle through enough hard, recoverable work. Many exercises can do both jobs.
Start with what you want to change
The American College of Sports Medicine is the main US sports-medicine body. Their latest position stand, an overview of 137 systematic reviews, separates the two outcomes clearly. Heavier loading of at least 80% of one-repetition maximum produced greater voluntary strength gains. Higher weekly set volumes produced greater muscle growth.
Those findings do not produce a universal exercise list. They change the questions you ask.
For strength, ask whether the exercise matches the skill you want to improve. If the goal is a stronger barbell squat, the barbell squat deserves regular practice. A machine can train some of the same muscles, but it does not rehearse balancing and moving the bar.
For muscle, ask whether the target muscle can work hard through a controlled, comfortable range, whether you can progress the exercise, and whether other limits end the set first. An exercise that is stable and easy to load may let you focus on the target muscle. That does not make instability bad. It makes stability one of several things that matter.
What should decide the exercise
No exercise belongs to one goal. What changes is which of these six checks gets to decide, and the two columns rarely disagree about the exercise. They disagree about the reason.

Worked against three exact Forte exercises
- Barbell Squat. Specificity decides it. If the squat is the lift you are testing, nothing else rehearses it.
- Barbell Bench Press. Fatigue decides it. It is expensive, so it goes early or not at all.
- Bent Over Dumbbell Row. Stability decides it. The torso position, not the back, often ends the set.
What decides an exercise is a judgement about the movement, not a label in the app.
Six things that matter
Specificity. Strength is specific to the task. Keep the competition lift or chosen test movement close to the centre of a strength plan. Muscle growth does not require the same loyalty to one exercise name.
Stability. More external support can reduce the balance and coordination demand. That may help muscle work when stability, grip or setup would otherwise stop the set. Strength practice may deliberately retain those demands when they belong to the target lift.
Range. Use a controlled, comfortable range that fits the exercise and the person. The ACSM review found greater voluntary strength gains with a complete range of motion on average. That is not permission to force a painful position.
Progression. You need a clear next step. For strength, that may be a small load increase while technique stays repeatable. For muscle, it may be more repetitions, another set, a small load increase or a version that keeps the target muscle working.
Fatigue. An exercise can be effective and still be expensive. If setup, bracing or whole-body fatigue limits the rest of the session, use it where that cost earns its place.
Equipment. The ACSM overview did not find equipment type or exercise complexity to consistently change outcomes across the included evidence. That supports choice, not indifference. Pick equipment you have, can use safely and can progress.

The Barbell Squat and Barbell Bench Press are exact practice choices when those lifts are the strength target. The Bent Over Dumbbell Row offers a dumbbell pulling option. Whether any of them belongs in a muscle-building plan depends on the muscle you are trying to train, the range you can control, the available equipment and how the exercise affects the rest of your work.
Do not infer an exercise plan from the catalogue's broad "Strength" category. That is a navigation label, not a scientific ruling on the only valid use for the movement.

Those names help you find the page. They are not outcome evidence. Open the programme, read its actual sessions and decide whether its schedule and exercise choices fit your goal and equipment.
Muscle needs enough work, not endless variety
The 2022 umbrella review reported that weekly set volume mattered for hypertrophy and discussed a threshold of at least ten sets per muscle group per week in the included evidence. The current ACSM stand also found greater hypertrophy with higher weekly volumes.
That figure is a research summary, not a starting quota for every reader. Training age, exercise choice, effort, recovery and how sets are counted all matter. Start with work you can recover from. Add only when the log and your performance support it.
Variety can spread stress across exercises, but every swap resets some skill and tracking. Keep movements long enough to compare sessions. Change an exercise when the reason is clear: pain, equipment, a poor target-muscle fit, stalled progression despite sensible adjustments, or fatigue that costs more than the exercise returns.
A simple selection order
- Name what you want to change and, for strength, the exact lift or task.
- Remove exercises you cannot set up safely or perform through a comfortable range.
- Choose one or two movements that match the goal and can be progressed.
- Check which muscle or system ends the set first.
- Keep the choice stable long enough for your log to mean something.
There is no prize for finding the cleverest exercise. The useful choice is the one that trains the intended task or muscle, fits the programme, and leaves you able to do the next planned session.
Frequently asked questions
Are compound exercises only for strength?
No. Compound exercises can support strength and muscle. Their value depends on the target, execution, loading, range, volume and fatigue cost.
Are isolation exercises useless for strength?
No. They can train muscles that support a larger lift. They are less specific than practising the lift itself, so they should not replace all task practice when maximal strength in that lift is the goal.
Do machines build less muscle than free weights?
The ACSM overview did not find equipment type to consistently affect outcomes. Exercise suitability and progression still matter.
