Choose the programme before you buy the equipment. A generic home-gym list can leave you with expensive kit that does not match the sessions you plan to run.
Forte's live barbell, dumbbell, or bodyweight comparison owns the first choice. The bodyweight training guide owns progression without a full gym. This page starts after you have chosen a programme family.
Use this purchase order
Programme first, purchase last
These are programme-derived minimums. Product dimensions and safe clearances still come from the manufacturer.
- Choose the programme. The programme decides the kit; the kit does not decide the programme.
- Read its current session list. Every item below was derived from one, not from a general shopping guide.
- Take the minimum list for that row. Nothing on it is optional; nothing off it is required to start.
- Measure the space and the storage. Clearances come from the manufacturer. This page has no dimensions and does not estimate them.
- Buy, in that order. Anything bought before step four is a guess about a room this page has not seen.

Start with one of four current programme shapes
The current session schedules support four useful home-gym starting points: a full-gym barbell setup, dumbbells with a bench or stable support, kettlebells with clear floor space, or calisthenics with rated anchors and supports. Product brands, prices, dimensions and room clearances are outside that evidence.

The useful minimum list
Full Body Fundamentals: a barbell, plates, rack, bench, dumbbells, a cable or pulldown station, and clear floor space. The first week names squats, bench presses, rows, deadlifts, overhead presses, pulldowns, cable rows, face pulls and pushdowns.
Dumbbell Only Mass Builder: dumbbells, a stable adjustable bench or equivalent support, and clear floor space. Current sessions include flat and incline presses, rows, goblet squats, Romanian deadlifts, lunges, step-ups and hip thrusts.
Kettlebell Warrior: a kettlebell load or small load range that works for swings, presses, rows, floor presses, windmills and Turkish get-ups, plus non-slip floor space and overhead clearance.
Calisthenics Athlete: a rated pull-up or chin-up anchor, a rated horizontal-row setup, rated dip support, and floor space. The current Pull day names pull-ups, Australian rows, chin-ups and inverted rows.
Use only equipment rated and installed for the intended movement and load. Stop if the setup shifts, the movement is uncontrolled, or it causes pain. Get qualified coaching before attempting unfamiliar overhead work, windmills or Turkish get-ups; this article cannot assess your technique, load choice or room.
Measure the room after the list is real
Measure storage and the working area for the exact equipment you have verified. Include the space needed to load, lift, enter, and leave the setup safely. Product dimensions and safety clearances must come from the manufacturer, not this article.
Separate the minimum list from later upgrades
The minimum list should contain only what the current sessions require. Keep a second list for items that add convenience, variety, or future capacity. Mixing those lists turns a useful check into a wish list and makes it harder to see the real cost of starting.
Write the programme and exercise beside every item. If an item has no current use, move it to the later list. If several exercises share one item, record that once. The result should be traceable back to the programme rather than to a generic home-gym article.
Verify substitutions before using them to save money
A cheaper or smaller item is not automatically a valid substitute. Check whether it supports the same exercise setup, loading, and safe use. The programme or exercise page must authorise the swap, or a qualified coach should review it.
This article does not recommend brands or prices. Those change quickly and require a separate current buying review. The stable decision is the order: programme, exact exercise list, verified equipment, room check, then purchase.
Frequently asked questions
What is the first thing I should buy?
Choose the programme first. For Dumbbell Only Mass Builder that means the dumbbells and support needed for its current presses, rows and lower-body work. For Kettlebell Warrior it means a usable kettlebell load and safe floor space.
Does dumbbell-only mean I need nothing else?
No. The current sessions include incline presses, step-ups and hip thrusts, so you still need a stable support that suits those exercises.
