About This Exercise

A horizontal-press machine variant of the bench press, performed seated with the path of motion fixed by the machine. Useful for joint-friendly chest training because the fixed path reduces stabilisation demand on the shoulder girdle compared to free-weight pressing — a meaningful trade-off when training around shoulder wear-and-tear that becomes common after age 40. Distinct from Smith Machine bench press (vertical bar path), Cable Crossover (Fly pattern, not Push), and free-weight bench press variants (no fixed path of motion). Covers both selectorized (one weight stack) and plate-loaded (e.g., Hammer Strength) machine chest presses — the fixed path of motion is what matters, not the loading mechanism.

1Setup

Adjust the seat so the handles align with mid-chest height when the elbows are at roughly 80-90 degrees of flexion. Sit upright against the back pad with feet flat on the floor (or on the foot platform if provided). Grip the handles with a neutral or pronated grip per the machine's design. Brace the trunk and engage the upper back to set the shoulder blades back and down before the first rep.

2Execution

Press the handles forward by extending the elbows, finishing with the arms extended but elbows slightly soft at lockout. Keep the shoulder blades back and down throughout — do not let the shoulders shrug forward at the top. Lower under control through a full range of motion until the elbows are roughly in line with the chest, pause briefly, then press again.

Pro Tips

  • Seat height matters — handles should align with mid-chest, not nipple-line or higher (high alignment shifts load onto the front delts and stresses the shoulder)
  • Shoulder blades stay set throughout — the chest does the work, not the front delts
  • Tempo: 2-3 seconds eccentric, brief pause at the chest, then press
  • For over-40 lifters: prioritise smooth controlled reps over heavy loads — fixed-path machines do their job best at moderate intensities with full ROM
